My name is Dunja Krcek. I am a visual artist and made my degree at the painting and experimental film department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, supervised by Prof. Judith Eisler, in January 2018. I work primarily with the medium painting and drawing and sometimes connect it with textile installations, sound and film.

In my artistic research I draw inspiration from observing the ambient aspects of my close surroundings. By „ambient“, I mean the elements that frame the atmosphere of a space, like sound, movement, light, architecture, and vegetation. With painting I relate towards these impulses deriving from my immediate environment. 

During the process a space in between movements of thoughts and physical movements starts to evolve. In its character it is undefined and not really clear about where to locate itself. I call it space in transition. By exploring different ways of mark making with various materials I try to make the subtlety of this imaginary place visible. I address uncertainty and the accompanying feeling of emptiness. Confronted with the interplay between numbness and activity, dissolving and manifesting, the resulting works show different densities of my spacious experiences. I understand them as meditations on being present.

I aim to define intimate spaces, which invite curiosity and imagination to thrive. Preparing this framework guides my concentration to places within the image that incite both excitement and calm. These are places that allow me to be still and have the opportunity to listen, while also instilling in me an eagerness to take action. My relationship to the painting changes many times. I have to disengage from it in order to expose myself to it. It is only within this dialogue of vulnerability that the painting reveals new paths and narrations.
